How to save a ChatGPT conversation

New to Droidex? Follow the first-conversation walkthroughBy Droidex · Updated
The simplest way to capture a chat once Droidex is installed: keep your vault unlocked in another Chrome tab, open your ChatGPT conversation, and click the Droidex icon → Save this chat. Return to Droidex, review the conversation in Import, and confirm to encrypt and save it. Here is the full setup and capture walkthrough.
1. Save a ChatGPT conversation with the Chrome extension
Choose this when you want to keep conversations readable, organise useful memories and prepare context for another AI. You stay signed in to ChatGPT on its own website; Droidex never asks for your ChatGPT password.
- Open the extension installation page in desktop Chrome and click Download test version. Installation is a one-time setup; the Chrome Web Store listing is still awaiting review.
- Extract droidex-extension.zip in your Downloads folder: on Windows, right-click → Extract All; on Mac, double-click the ZIP.
- Type chrome://extensions into Chrome’s address bar. Turn on Developer mode, click Load unpacked, and choose the extracted folder containing manifest.json—not the ZIP. Keep this folder in place. In Edge, use edge://extensions instead.
- Click Chrome’s puzzle-piece Extensions icon and pin Droidex so its icon is easy to find beside the address bar.
- Create or open a Droidex vault in the same browser. Creating one requires a Droidex account; unlocking an existing vault does not. Keep the unlocked tab open.
- Sign in at ChatGPT as usual, open the conversation you want to keep, and scroll through the messages you need. Then click the Droidex extension icon → Save this chat.
- Return to your unlocked Droidex tab and open Import if it has not opened automatically. Review the received conversation and confirm the import. Capture alone does not save it permanently.
- Open Chats to read the saved conversation. Download and verify an encrypted .droidex backup before clearing browser data or moving to another device.
If the chat does not appear
Make sure Droidex and the AI chat are open in the same browser, your vault is unlocked, and the extension is enabled. Click Save this chat again, then return to Import. The extension page’s guided check can check whether the extension is detected and a capture has arrived. Review promptly: unclaimed captures are discarded after 10 minutes or when the browser closes.
Capture is manual, for the supported chat page you click on—not background syncing, hidden ChatGPT memory or an entire account export. It captures readable chat text, not a guaranteed archive of attachments, images or every conversation branch. Check the imported messages; provider page changes can affect capture.
The captured text is processed on your device and encrypted into your local vault after confirmation. It is not uploaded to Droidex or sent to cloud AI. Your original conversation remains with OpenAI, and anything you later choose to paste into another AI is shared with that destination.
Droidex is in open beta and has not been independently security-audited. Read the encryption and recovery limitations before relying on it.
ChatGPT export vs PDF vs Droidex
Droidex extension
- Best for
- Keeping chat text in a reusable local vault
- What you get
- Reviewed conversation saved in an encrypted vault
- When
- Manual capture, then confirm the import
- Privacy
- Captured text stays on your device; no AI passwords shared with Droidex
- Main limitation
- Desktop Chrome/Edge test build; installation required; not an entire-account backup
Account export
- Best for
- An account-wide archive
- What you get
- ZIP with chat history and other account data
- When
- Email or SMS link; may take up to 7 days
- Privacy
- Requested from OpenAI; downloaded files are not a Droidex encrypted backup
- Main limitation
- Not a single-chat export; availability depends on account or workspace
Browser PDF
- Best for
- A readable copy of one chat
- What you get
- A PDF of the printable page
- When
- Save locally from the print dialog
- Privacy
- A normal PDF is not encrypted by default
- Main limitation
- Check the preview: long chats, images and code may not print completely
2. Export your ChatGPT history and account data
Use OpenAI’s built-in export when you want an account archive rather than a printout of one conversation.
- Sign in to ChatGPT and open your profile menu.
- Go to Settings → Data controls → Export data.
- Confirm the export request.
- Watch for the download link by email or SMS. OpenAI says delivery can take up to 7 days and the link expires 24 hours after receipt.
- Download the ZIP while signed in to the requesting account, and keep it somewhere private.
The ZIP contains chat history and other relevant account data, not a promised PDF of each chat. Self-service export is available for consumer plans and eligible Edu workspaces; Business, Enterprise and Healthcare workspaces do not offer this export. Managed-workspace users should check with their workspace owner. OpenAI also offers requests through its Privacy Portal.
OpenAI’s current export instructions
Do not treat an export ZIP as an encrypted backup. If you later import it into Droidex, review the result: the ChatGPT file importer has not yet been validated against a real redacted account export. Keep your original archive.
3. Save a ChatGPT conversation as a PDF
This uses your browser’s print function—not ChatGPT’s account export. It is useful for a readable document or a printout.
- Open the conversation you want to save. Scroll through it and let the messages you need appear.
- Open the browser menu and select Print (usually Ctrl + P on Windows or Command + P on Mac).
- Select Save as PDF as the destination. Some browsers call it “Print to PDF”; on macOS, look for the PDF menu.
- Inspect every page of the preview, particularly the first and last messages, code blocks, tables and images.
- Save the file, then open it to check that the content you need is present.
Printing cannot be relied on to capture a whole long chat. If the preview omits messages, copy the required text into a local document and print that instead. A PDF is not a structured conversation archive and is not encrypted by default. Droidex does not currently import PDFs.
Common questions
Is a shared ChatGPT link a private backup?
No. OpenAI says anyone with a shared link can view the linked conversation. Avoid shared links for sensitive content, and keep a downloaded or local copy if you need an archive.
Can I save a conversation on my phone?
The Droidex web app can display on mobile, but this extension is for desktop browsers, not the ChatGPT phone app. On mobile, use the available browser or system print/share controls for a document copy, or request an account export from ChatGPT. Options vary by device; check the saved file.
Will a saved chat become another AI’s memory automatically?
No. Droidex prepares a context pack you review, copy or download. You paste it into the destination yourself; that AI decides how it uses and stores the text.
